While fixing his father's treadmill in the late 1970s, Frank Trulaske came up with an idea for a new business.

Trulaske thought the overall design of the treadmill, which needed constant repair, was weak. He was sure he could manufacture a better product.

His strategy was to develop and position his treadmills as a high-end product. After seven renditions of treadmill prototypes, True Fitness Technology Inc. was born in 1981.

By 1985, demand was strong enough that Trulaske left his father's manufacturing business to build what is today a 125,000-square-foot manufacturing center. True Fitness now produces 24 treadmill models for home and commercial use.

"The fitness industry as a whole is doing very well," said Herb Eggerding, a consultant who has worked with True Fitness for three years. "True Fitness is exceeding the rapid growth that is being experienced in the industry."

True Fitness has been a leader in innovations for treadmill design and operation. Major product developments have included an affordable electric incline feature, a shock-absorbing system and an orthopedic tread belt.

Eggerding said: "The competition has emulated a lot of things that True Fitness has taken the lead in as far as product-line advances and trends."

Eggerding cites superior product development, an "effective and loyal" dealer network, and the company's reputation for quality and service as a few of the components that allow True Fitness to remain an industry leader.

The patent and manufacture of a treadmill that automatically controls the user's heart rate during a workout has established True Fitness as one of the top makers of treadmills that control heart rate. True Heart Rate Control treadmills are used at many cardiac rehabilitation centers.

True Fitness' product development committee is working on a non-motorized treadmill that will provide a workout for the whole body. The arm-powered treadmill should be available by the end of the year.

True Fitness produces most components in its own plant. Within the past two years, innovative manufacturing processes, investment in computerized equipment and work-force incentives have led to increased productivity and quality.

The company's current three-year strategic plan calls for annual revenue and earnings growth at rates exceeding 20 percent. True Fitness also is considering acquisitions to broaden its line of fitness products and to further improve revenue and earnings.

Each year, the management team works on a succeeding three-year plan and selects 10 goals for the company. Goals are reviewed monthly. The management team ultimately is rewarded based on the company's bottom-line performance.

"Frank has excellent managerial skills," Eggerding said. "He very effectively delegates responsibilities to his key people and lets them carry through on the plan of the business."

In addition to his work with True Fitness, Trulaske sits on the boards of Magna Bank, Lindenwood University and the Salvation Army; the St. Charles Regional Commerce and Growth Advisory Committee; and the development board of St. Louis Children's Hospital.

Trulaske also leads a group of investors who are developing and managing a new 10,000-seat arena in St. Charles County. The arena, which is scheduled for completion in September 1999, will host minor-league hockey and basketball games, concerts, circuses and high school athletic events.

True Fitness has four categories of home treadmills. The series names are M, ES, PS and Z. All have heavy-gauge steel frames that are robotically welded, so there’s no need for owners to occasionally tighten the bolts. Horsepower is strong, ranging from 3.0 to 4.0. Their top speed is 12 mph. Except for the M Series, all have incline or incline/decline to replicate outdoor surface conditions and better promote muscle toning.

True Fitness M Series

True’s “M” is for motivation. This collection includes the M30 and M50. They are compact home treadmills with ample workout surfaces and 3.0 HP motors. Great basics are provided but preset programming is light. These models are essentially the same treadmill except the M50 has orthopedic cushioning.

True Fitness ES Series

The ES900 with incline AND decline stands alone in the True ES series, but the base is sold with four console options. The most advanced console measures 15?! The ES900 has 40 workout apps and a 4.0 HP motor.

True Fitness PS Series

Treadmills in the PS collection seem very similar to the ES900’s options, but they sell for less. The main difference is that the PS800 and PS825 have automated inclines of 15%, but they don’t have the ES900’s 3% decline. They also have shorter warranties.

True Fitness Z Series

The True Z5.0 and Z5.4 Treadmills are very compact. Unlike those in the M Series, they have short tracks and are therefore only recommended for walking, not running. They have 3.0 HP motors and seven preset programs. The main difference between the Z5.0 and Z5.4 is the latter’s adjustable cushioning.
