Wearable technology has become a major market segment and is evolving rapidly; companies are developing new solutions that can aid the wearable tech market as it moves into its next phase. Wearable technology is so popular for consumers due to the functionalities offered. Self-tracking gadgets are now leveraging advances in sensing and monitoring technologies and have been used to deliver critical information to the wearer in real time.
Although wearable tech is still a young technology, its outlook is already said to be bright. In fact, a new study by International Data Corporation forecasts further quantitative growth in revenues, unit shipments and sales of wearable devices for the years 2014 to 2018. As per  Deloitte (News - Alert)'s research, wearable tech companies will ship in the neighborhood of 10 million devices (or "units" as Deloitte phrases it), which include smart glasses, watches and fabrics, fitness and activity tracking bands in 2014; it predicts 100+ million wearable tech units will be shipped by 2020. Juniper expects the worldwide spending on wearable devices to hit $19 billion by 2018, as the availability of new apps (in fitness and wellness) increases.
ABI Research (News - Alert) is certain there will be more wearable devices in the health and fitness sectors; it estimates the global market could reach as many as 170 million devices by 2017. The company believes that allowing the wearer to tap into apps and enable the consumer to access body information, in real-time, providing some form of feedback will become important services and fuel the growth.
Thanks to low power wireless connectivity, sensor technology, particularly in the health and medical space, and new materials and structures embedded with microelectronics, the potential uses of wearable computing technologies in various forms, especially in smart clothing, will make them mainstream devices in the coming years.
Consumers can expect such apparel, which is sure to come in many stylish designs, capable of acting as health coaches as well as activity trackers to monitor data like heart rate and let the wearer know if they are overdoing physical activities during a workout.
Wearable tech that focuses on well-being, equipped with health apps that contain fitness monitors, and includes its own motion sensor, are being used more in these day than before to track the wearer’s health state, like their heartbeat. Gear like smart clothing (with and without a chest strap) is one of those garments able to record and log someone’s movement and beam out vitals to a nearby smartphone or tablet, for example.
Currently, apps and wearable devices have gained much attention; a recent post on the Engadget website, in fact, announced some of the last pieces of clothing that you think would go “smart.” As the source disclosed, it informed the launch of the collection of OM Biometric Smartwear, which is available for pre-order. Different than fitness wearables that wrap around a wrist or clip to a belt, as the post noted, OMsignal's biometric four smart shirts for men (that is not yet available for women) leverages the emerging market of smart fabrics. Company CEO and founder Stéphane Marceau claims the biometric shirt is “the ultimate wearable;” it uses embedded sensors that can measure the wearer's heart rate, breathing and movement, activity intensity and more, the post affirmed.
Further details of the Biometric Smartwear shirt, which measures the wearer’s activity, physiological stress, fitness levels, and displays the results in real time, can be found on the OMsignal website. Those interested in one of OMsignal’s four shirts that track performance, health, and fitness will find them available for men coming this summer; women’s shirts are expected to be available by the end of the year.
Imagining the possibilities to use such apparel that monitors breathing habits and tells iPhones or iPads about it while continuously tracking biometrics is easy; it can potentially help wearers be fitter, healthier, and happier. Unfortunately, the garment is not cheap (up to $200 USD for pre-orders on certain apparel), as the post disclosed. At launch, the shirts will come in four male styles—undershirt, sleeveless shirt, casual t-shirt, long-sleeved shirt.
Furthermore, as mentioned on the OMsignal smart shirt website, the little black box that is used as a tracking module of body biometrics and vital signs is an extra expenditure, $119 USD. It can be clipped onto the shirts to track activities when it is connected to a phone or tablet via Bluetooth. This easy-to-use and wear apparel uses the OMsignal app that is available for the iOS platform only for now but, an Android (News - Alert) version will be released in the future, the company affirms.Cult of California is a Los Angeles-based clothing line focusing on Plus-sized Athletic Wear.  Founded in 2012 by designer Jen Wilder, who has worked in Los Angeles for the last 10 years, designing for Laundry by Shelli Segal, Forever 21, Bebe, BCBG, Marciano and Guess.  Cult of California is a gathering place of inclusion and inspiration.  Our goal is to promote beauty in all sizes, health in all sizes and style in all aspects of the plus woman’s life.
